Because the upper back (thoracic spine) is very stable and has little motion, this area generally doesn’t tend to develop degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, or disc herniations, most often these conditions arise in the lower back (lumbar spine).

Though not as common as lower back pain, upper back pain can be very painful. It can arise as a result of trauma or sudden injury, or it can be caused by poor posture or strain over time. The most common causes of upper back pain are:

Myofascial Pain (muscular irritation)

Upper back area painThe girdle of the shoulder is attached to the shoulder blade and the back of the thoracic rib cage by large muscles. Often, upper back pain is due to weakness in these muscles or overuse through repetitive movements. It can also be caused by automobile accidents sports injuries and other strains. Muscle irritation in the upper back can usually be resolved by massage therapy, exercise and physical therapy,

Joint Dysfunction

When this occurs in the two joints that connect the ribs to the thoracic spine, it can lead to upper back pain. Treatment usually involves manual manipulation to relieve discomfort.

Chiropractic techniques such as diversified manipulation, cox flexion, chiropractic biophysics and the Thompson technique may all be used to help alleviate the discomfort of upper back pain.

Additional therapies such as massage therapy and nutritional counseling may also be of benefit.
